The Unfaithful Timandra
When of age, Timandra’s father would arrange a marriage Echemus, a member of the Arcadian royal family, and the man who would become King of Tegea. The marriage would create strong bonds between Sparta and Arcadia.
The marriage of Timandra and Echemus would also produce one son, Ladocus.
Timandra though, would leave her husband, for later she was found in Dulichium, where she would marry Phyleus, son of Augeas. Some say that Timandra’s second marriage brought forth an additional son, Meges, a named Greek hero, although the mother of Meges is also given as other women.
The reason for the unfaithfulness of Timandra is often given over to the goddess Aphrodite. It was said that Tyndareus had forgotten to sacrifice to the goddess, offending Aphrodite. Aphrodite would punish Timandra, Clytemnestra and Helen to be unfaithful. Philonoe though, was not cursed, for she was a devotee of Artemis.
