GORGOPHONE IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Gorgophone was a famous female character from the tales of Greek mythology, for she was a daughter of the heroic Perseus, as well as being a Queen twice over.
Gorgophone Daughter of Perseus
Gorgophone was one of the two daughters of the hero Perseus and his wife Andromeda; the other daughter being Autochthe, the future wife of King Aegeus. Gorgophone would have seven brothers; Perses, Electryon, Alcaeus, Heleus, Mestor, Sthenelus and Cynurus.
Gorgophone was so named in honour of her father, for the name Gorgophone means “Gorgon Slayer”. |

Gorgophone Twice Married
When of age Gorgophone would marry Perieres, son of Aeolus, and King of Messenia. Gorgophone, though, is famed in Greek mythology for being the first woman to marry twice; for upon the death of Perieres, Gorgophone would marry King Oebalus of Sparta.
As Pausanias described, previously women who were widowed were expected to remain single.
Gorgophone is named as mother of a number of children, although there is disagreement about just who were children of Perieres and who were the offspring of Oebalus. Most commonly, Gorgophone was named as mother of Aphareus, Arene, Icarius, Leucippus and Tyndareus, but also occasionally Borus, Pisus and Polydora were named.
Some ancient sources claim that Gorgophone, upon her death, would be buried in Argos.
