LAPITHUS IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Lapithus was a mortal king from the tales of Greek mythology; Lapithus was famous for being the eponym of the Lapiths, a famous peoples of Ancient Greece.
Lapithus Son of Apollo
Lapithus was the son of the god Apollo, born to Stilbe, a naiad nymph, daughter of the Potamoi Peneus; Lapithus would have a brother, born to the same parents, in the form of Centaurus.
Lapithus and the Lapiths
Lapithus would settle in the land near the banks of the River Peneus in Thessaly; with some saying that he forced out the native Perrhaebians. Lapithus would marry Orsinome, a daughter of Eurynomus, and with his wife, Lapithus became parents to Diomede, future wife of Amyclas; Phorbas of Elis, and Periphas.
Periphas would succeed his father as king, and would name his subjects as Lapiths in his father’s honour.
Famous Lapiths were descended from Lapithus via Periphas, for Ixion was great-grandson of Lapithus, via Periphas’ son Antion, and of course Pirithous was Ixion’s son.
Whilst the Lapiths were named for Lapithus, the Centaurs were named for Lapthius’ brother Centaurus; and of course the two peoples descended from Apollo, would famously fight during the Centauromachy.
